For a long time, wellness has been treated as something separate from everyday life.
Something reserved for vacations.
Something we’ll get to when work slows down.
Something we’ll prioritize when everything else is sorted.
But if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that wellbeing cannot always wait.
Across Nigeria, more people are having conversations about stress, burnout, rest, and mental health than ever before. While these conversations are important, there is another part of wellness that often gets overlooked: creativity.
At Relaks, we call it creative wellness.
What Is Creative Wellness?
Creative wellness is the idea that creative activities can play an important role in supporting our overall wellbeing.
This doesn’t mean you need to be an artist.
Creativity can look like:
- Coloring
- Journaling
- Writing
- Crafting
- Painting
- Photography
- Dancing
Even doodling during a quiet moment
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is expression.
Why Creativity Matters
As adults, we spend much of our lives consuming.
We consume content.
We consume information.
We consume news.
But we rarely create.
Creative activities allow us to slow down, engage our minds differently, and reconnect with ourselves in a way that feels restorative rather than demanding.
Research continues to show positive connections between creativity, emotional wellbeing, stress reduction, and overall mental health. Creative expression has been linked to emotional regulation, improved wellbeing, and greater psychological resilience.
The Nigerian Context
Life in Nigeria is vibrant, exciting, and full of possibility.
It can also be demanding.
Long commutes.
Economic pressures.
Work responsibilities.
Family commitments.
Constant connectivity.
Many people are navigating significant levels of stress while trying to build meaningful lives.
Because of this, wellness solutions need to be accessible.
Not everyone can take a weekend retreat.
Not everyone has hours to spare.
But many people can find twenty minutes to color, journal, sketch, or engage in another creative activity.
Sometimes small moments of care make a meaningful difference.
Wellness Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
One of the biggest misconceptions about self-care is that it has to be expensive or elaborate.
The truth is that wellness often lives in ordinary moments.
A quiet cup of tea.
A walk without your phone.
A journal entry before bed.
A coloring page completed after a busy day.
These moments may seem small, but they help create space for rest, reflection, and presence.
Building a More Creative Future
At Relaks, we’re passionate about making wellness feel more approachable.
We believe creativity is not a luxury.
We believe rest is productive.
And we believe everyone deserves simple tools that support their wellbeing.
As conversations around mental health and self-care continue to grow in Nigeria, we hope creativity becomes part of that conversation too.
Because sometimes the most powerful forms of wellness are also the simplest.
